How to Attach Poly Tubing to PVC

Attaching poly tubing to PVC is sometimes necessary when building or expanding an irrigation system. Combining the strength of rigid PVC with the flexibility of polyethylene tubing allows you to craft a durable main line that branches off into other sections that can navigate curves and tight spaces. This setup makes it easier to expand your layout without replacing large sections of pipe.

How Do You Attach Poly Tubing to PVC?

The easiest way to attach poly tubing to PVC is with compression adapters. These tiny PVC to poly adapters will turn a PVC coupler into a compression fitting. The process is actually quite simple, and we’re going to walk you through it! The process will only take a couple of minutes and will leave you with a secure, leak-resistant connection.

Sprinkler Warehouse supplies a variety of compression adapters that will turn a normal PVC coupler into a compression fitting. You can browse through our compression fittings and inserts and order online today.

Find the Outside Diameter of Your Poly Tubing

The trick to compression fittings is that you have to know the O.D. or outside diameter of your tubing. These fittings grip the tubing by squeezing around its outside surface, so if the O.D. is too small for the adapter, the connection will be loose and may leak or blow apart under pressure. However, if the tubing is too large, the tubing won’t fit into the adapter at all. Some of the most common sizes of fittings are:

  • .700 OD
  • .710 OD
  • .670 OD
  • .940 OD

Once you’ve selected your fitting, it’s time to connect everything. First, prime the outside of the adapter, the outside of the pipe, and the inside of both ends of the coupler.  You could do the connection to the pipe separately, but it goes together so quickly, so there’s no real need to.  Finally, apply cement to the fitting, the PVC pipe, and the inside of both ends of the coupler.

How to Connect Poly Tubing to PVC

When connecting poly pipe to PVC, we recommend putting the coupler on the pipe first. Afterwards, try to give the pipe a quick quarter turn to make sure it has a good seal. After that, it’s time to add the poly tubing. If you’re having trouble getting the poly tubing to go in, you can soak it in warm, soapy water for ten seconds to soften and lubricate the tubing.

These adapters are one-time use only.  If you need to remove them, you’ll have to cut the pipe and the poly tubing at the coupler.
