Raise A Spray Head, The Easy Way

Today I’m going to show you how to raise a spray head the easy way using Kap-it. I’m Dwayne Smith Sprinkler Warehouse Product Specialist. Let’s get started.

As your spray head sits in the ground, leaf debris, grass clippings, and soil movement can and often do cover up the top of the head. This results in your spray head is much less effective at watering your lawn. This means wasting water, wasting money, and creating trouble spots on your lawn. The top of the spray head should be level with the top of the dirt. If it’s below the ground, you need to raise your head. The typical process of raising a spray head usually involves digging up the entire head. If it was installed on a nipple riser you’ll also need to get a new nipple riser to raise the head.

Unless you installed it yourself you don’t know what’s down there until you dig it out. Roots, rocks piping, wires, and any number of things could be under the ground. And if you’re not really careful when digging out the spray head you could break your irrigation pipe, the riser, or the swing joint. Now what the Kap-it does, is it eliminates the need to dig out the head and eliminates the need for a new riser. All the stuff under the ground stays underground. And it does it in a tiny fraction of the time it normally takes to raise ahead. The Kap-it extends the sprinkler head riser; this part is right here. And it extends the top of the sprinkler head body. Elevate don’t excavate.

Each Kap-it raises the top of your spray head by an inch and a half. The Kap-it is durable and made to last the lifetime of the sprinkler head that you attach it to. It fits the most common sprinkler bodies out there, Such as the Rain Bird 1800 popups and the Hunter Pro-Sprays, and many others. Let’s see it in action.

First, you’ll need to expose the top of the spray head. We’re going to use the Kut-it tool to do that. But you can use a hand spade but the Kut-it tool makes it quick and easy. Make sure the top is reasonably clean. You don’t want a layer of dirt on there. Pull up the riser assembly. Twist the nozzle off and remove the filter. Be careful to not get any dirt down inside the head or riser assembly. If you do, it will need to be flushed out. Now install the riser extension. Twist on hand tight. While holding the riser up, slip the cap extender over the riser. Push down on the cap until you hear it pop into place. Reinstall your filter and nozzle.

You can even ratchet your stem to adjust your nozzle direction. The little extension that we put on there doesn’t change that ability at all. And pack the dirt back around the head. And you’re done. And notice that your sprinkler head wiper seal is now protected from the elements. And you can quite easily access the internal parts of the head should you need to do a repair. Kap-it’s are going to save you time and save your back. Remember to elevate! Don’t excavate! Pick up your Kap-it’s today on Sprinkler Warehouse dot com.
