Call 811 Before You Tap Into Your Main Line

I wanted to make a short little video about a couple of important things that you need to do before you get started installing a sprinkler system or trenching your yard. One of the first tasks you’ll do when installing a sprinkler system is to tap into your main service line. Many areas require that you obtain permits before doing this. There are a few water districts that require that the mainline only be tapped by a certified irrigator. You’ll need to check with your water district before making access to the line to ensure that you are within local laws and codes.
Tap After Your Water Meter – Not Before
A reminder that when tapping a line it needs to be after your water meter, not before. Water districts tend to frown on attempts to get free water. Also, do not tap into pipes that run through your house or any building, for the purposes of an irrigation system. That will restrict flow to your irrigation system, possibly damage your pipes, and create unnecessary noise in your house. And if you have a water softener installed you are now supplying the entire yard with that water softener. Not good for the lawn or your wallet.
811 is a free nationwide FCC-designated phone number that will help you to notify your utility companies and arrange for marking of the utility lines. It doesn’t matter whether you are a professional irrigator or a property owner, before trenching or breaking ground in your yard, call 811 to notify any utility companies that may have lines buried on your property. They’ll send someone out to mark the property with flags or paint to indicate where utility lines are buried.
