The solenoid and diaphragm of a sprinkler valve tend to wear out at about the same rate. Replacing the diaphragm and solenoid is the method we at Sprinkler Warehouse recommend. Let’s get started!

You Might Consider Replacing The Valve

The solenoid and diaphragm are available for purchase separately for most valves. However, it’s often cheaper, and more effective to simply purchase the exact same model of irrigation valve you’re replacing, which will come with a new top, and internal parts, a diaphragm, solenoid, screws, and spring.

Access The Sprinkler System’s Valve Box

We’ll start by pulling out the valve box. If your valve box has enough room, you can possibly work inside the box without removing it. However, it’s often easier to dig out the valve box and get it out of your way.

Cut the wires going to the solenoid. It’s a good idea to clean around the top of the valve to avoid getting debris inside the valve once we open it. This is a bolt-on valve top. So, we’ll need to use a screwdriver or nut driver to remove the top. Pay attention to which side of the valve the solenoid is on so you can replace the top oriented correctly. Upon opening the valve more water will probably seep out. This is normal.

Removing The Diaphragm From The Irrigation Valve

On this particular valve, the diaphragm tends to stay connected to the top of the valve when you remove it. Remove the diaphragm support ring. Now we’ll remove the top from the new donor valve.

Remove the new support ring from the donor valve, and place it in the old valve. Now carefully line up the new top on the old valve, making sure that the solenoid is on the same side as it was on the top that was removed. Tighten the screws using a screwdriver or nut driver. When tightening the screws work in a crisscross pattern. Do not overtighten it because you might strip the screws or even crack the valve body. If that happens you will need to cut out and replace the entire valve.

Reattach the wires using waterproof wire connectors. Connect one lead from the solenoid to the hot wire, and one lead to the common wire, or wires. It does not matter which lead coming from the solenoid connects to the hot; or which connects to the common. Replace the valve box, and backfill the hole.
